The parents of three young boys commissioned this extension to their home to accommodate future family adventures. The outcome is both flexible and robust, containing a variety of spatial types within a modest sized building. A large dormitory at the first stage can be later subdivided into two conventional bedrooms or become a master suite with negligible reconfigurations. The orthogonal logic of this space is contrasted with a series of smaller, idiosyncratic nooks along the northern edge; a small bedroom or cosy study, a generous window seat or display ledge for family artefacts, an enlarged corridor or gallery space. Whilst sitting comfortably beside the clarity of the existing 1950's residence the extension reflects both a contemporary aesthetic and the owners' modernist sensibilities. Rather than pre-empt and thereby preclude future social scenarios this renovation seeks to enrich family life via spaces which provide uninhibited event opportunities.
