The clubhouse provides both physical and social amenity to a busy State School pool. With weekly club meets, ongoing swim training and regular school use, the provision of an identity and address for the club was central to the project.
The geometry of the building is playful yet simple - emphasising level changes in the site and contrasting against the adjacent 1970's institutional architecture. A robust masonry base, housing pragmatic utilities, supports a lightweight ‘social’ upper structure. Taking cues from the grandstand typology, the transparency of the upper space allows for uninterrupted supervision of the water below. Circulation occurs above the pool edge via large encircling verandahs. This approach provides a legibility of use and activation which reinforces the communal ethos underpinning the organisation.
