Located in an inner northern Brisbane suburb of post-war timber houses. The existing house affords a northern outlook towards Eildon Hill and Wilston Hill.
The brief called for more liveable internal spaces and an enhanced connection between living areas and the backyard. The response included retaining part of the existing exterior, whilst opening up the central core of the house to the outside and adding a living pod to the rear of the property.
The extruded form of the new living pod, stepped down from the existing house, bridges the previous broken spatial relationship between house and backyard. With greater appreciation of the benefits of the sub-tropic environment, this house now has a direct connection to the landscape both visually and physically. The double height internal space further enhances this experience.
