Keswick Island Resort Village

Keswick Island is located in the southern half of the Whitsunday group of islands. The Resort Facilities building is located on the waterfront in the Basil Bay precinct. It is aimed at providing amenities and a gathering space for the community of Keswick Island. It includes a convenience store, a restaurant and a conference room. These spaces are connected by a partially enclosed deck that is orientated towards Basil Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

The simple building form reflects the scale and materials of the houses built at the higher end of the site adjacent the road entry. A timber clad box defines the entry and houses the store and reception area. Large timber beams arch over the walkway and define the clear path to the pool and beach as well as providing outdoor space for the restaurant and bar. This also softens the edge of the building which sits in a well landscaped natural environment.

The simple building section was adopted to allow ease of construction with all construction deliveries to arrive by boat. The building section reduces in ceiling height as it steps down to the pool and the beach. Passive design principles are adopted with the use of skylights and roof ventilators which is a direct response to the climatic conditions of this region. This is further considered with well shaded external areas and the seamless connection of outdoor and indoor spaces. The building is to be enjoyed by visitors and patrons alike.
