A unique rural site set on sloping north-east green pasture, the site is bordered by telegraph pole trees to the south and a billabong to the north that forms the immediate constraints of buildable area. A rim of mountains provides a horizon of green and defines the extents of the rural community to which the land responds.
The brief required master planning three adjacent sites to accommodate the Martinek Farmhouse – residence for a young family, the Cole House – residence for extended family members and a Work + Yoga Studio. Each building references the central fresh water dam, with vegetation providing privacy between the dwellings.
The Martinek Farmhouse is a new house designed for a young family who enjoy a relaxed lifestyle and have previously lived on an adjoining site. Located mid slope, the house sits itself across the contours of the land barely visible from the road. A windmill in the billabong is the reference point of the dwelling.
We split the spatial brief into four separate wings: sleeping 1, sleeping 2, service and living. These wings are joined together by a circulation spine that also provides a space for entry and observation of the surrounding landscape and the client’s collection of artwork.
