Club Parkhurst
Rockhampton
Club Parkhurst is the new home for the Rockhampton Leagues Club. Reddog Architects delivered interior design and documentation for the refurbished and extended venue, working in collaboration with Design AA.
The design takes its cues from the surrounding Central Queensland landscape: the Fitzroy Basin with its tributaries, the bay and reef, wetlands, canyons and ranges. Each zone within the building has its own character drawn from these references, giving the space variety and a strong sense of place without feeling disconnected.
With the club needing a large number of screens throughout for advertising, sport and information, a consistent zone was created across the interior to house them all. To stop these from dominating the interior, a consistent zone runs through the full length of the building to house all screens and signage, bringing order to what could easily feel chaotic.
Simple horizontal datums run across the whole project, tying the old and new parts of the building together and helping people navigate their way around the space. Organic shapes and curves appear throughout, softening the interior, reflecting the landscape references, and responding to how people naturally move through and settle into the space.
Screens are used not just for display but as dividers between zones, carving out quieter, more intimate spots where people can tuck away from the louder, more active areas of the club.
In the dining space, part of the existing building, skylights were cut into the ceiling to bring natural light deep into the plan. As well as improving the feel of the space, they introduce colour into what was a plain back-of-house ceiling.
