Situated within the beachside tourist hub of Coffs Harbour this foodcourt design creates a powerful, contextually specific identity for the centre and sets up a language for incrementally refurbishing other spaces. The design resolves the foodcourt’s circulation diagram through the introduction of two axial paths connecting mall entries to key destination tenancies. The introduction of a second storey ‘verandah’ creates a relaxing retreat within the busy hub, allowing for an enhanced experience of the existing atrium and provides a unique new experience.
The existing ceiling structure is overclad with reflective materials enhancing the effects of natural light entering the space from perimeter clerestories. This faceted, light filled volume replicates the feeling of being ‘inside a wave’. At the lower levels raised colourful platforms, sinuous timber and concrete joinery and natural toned flooring are robust and tactile; simulating familiar qualities of sand dunes, lagoons and rocky outcrops.
